Trimming

Observation

Cause/reason

  • The plane tends to turn right and left while climbing
  • After a dive flight the plane tends to ascend instead of coming into level flight
  • At full gas the plane will ascend

Wing angle too positive

  • The plane tends a constant dive

Wing angle too negative

  • The plane tends to ascend during steep turns
  • A roll is not nicely axial

Center of gravity too much forward

  • The tail tends to descend during turns
  • Control is very sensitive
  • Poor flight characteristics upwind
  • The plane is unstable

Center of gravity too much to the aft

  • The plane suddenly ‘jumps up’ when the engine is switched off during a straight flight
  • The stabilizer requires excessive setting up in level flight
  • Poor flight characteristics upwind
  • The plane is unstable

The engine is focused too much down (downthrust)

  • During a steep climb, almost stall, the plane tends to pull to the right
  • The plane tends to pull to the right, at the top of a loop

The engine is situated too far to the right

  • During a steep climb, almost stall, the plane tends to pull to the left
  • The plane tends to pull to the left at the top of a loop

The engine is situated too little to the right

  • The aircraft wants to break on the side of the heavy wing during loopings
  • The ailerons will be trimmed unevenly

One wing is heavier than the other
